Zee Avi

Izyan Alirahman and Justin Bieber share one thing in common.  Yes, only one.  And, it's not talent or widespread appeal (unfortunately).  Izyan Allrahman, better known as Zee Avi (or Koko Kaina), got her break when self-made recordings posted on her YouTube channel were discovered by Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs), who eventually passed along the recommendation to an executive at Brushfire Records.  Just like Bieber, Zee Avi saw her world change overnight as she rushed to put out an album and promote its release across the United States.  Although her self-titled release was not certified platinum or gold, several tracks did fare well enough to be played in retail stores, on the radio, and as background music to some pretty saccharine TV commercials.

Commercial success aside, this album showcases every one of Avi's musical talents and eccentricities wonderfully.  Playful, sprightly, and witty at times, she isn't afraid to approach more difficult topics such as love and heartbreak, yet even this is done with an endearing whimsy that only a newly-minted and doe-eyed singer-songwriter could possess.  Thankfully, the suits at Brushfire allowed Avi to retain the very Malaysian elements that add authenticity to her songs and provide a needed infusion of foreign culture into American music -- in addition to ukelele, she alternates between Malay and English at times, most notably on the wry "Kantoi."  Best yet, her live performances are as good musically and even more captivating than her studio recordings.  Although I listed several track recommendations below, I would highly recommend playing the album from start to finish.  You won't regret it.

Albums:  Zee Avi (2009)
