Laura Gibson
Laura Gibson is a singer-songwriter by definition, though this label does little to describe the stylistic plasticity she exhibits from track to track. Sometimes Gibson seeks to soothe with an acoustic serenade, yet other times she creates a more complex aesthetic in line with that of orchestral pop, or at least alt-country. She has not released an album in two years, but her two LPs are stellar examples of how mastering mood can sometimes be more important than melody itself.
Albums: Beasts of Seasons (2009), If You Come to Greet Me (2006)
Tracks: Spirited, Broken Bottle, Certainty, Hands in Pockets
On this track below, you may notice how Gibson uses the marxophone (The Magnetic Fields have utilized this extensively in the past) to infuse her folk motif with a distinct Filipino rondalla vibe. I love it!!
